EAST VILLAGE, LOWER EAST SIDE
This neighborhood from below Houston Street to the Manhattan Bridge and from the East River to the Bowery seems to sustain its unprecedented and speedy transformation from down and out to hip and desirable. Today, the neighborhood chic is even more apparent as new buyers move in and smart shops and restaurants continue to emerge side by side - and real estate prices increase.
Clinton, Ludlow and Rivington Streets are suddenly Manhattan's most avant-garde shopping streets and bar hopping along Orchard & Ludlow is, shall we say, convenient. Neighborhood galleries like Big Cat, Julio Chacur and St. Mark Miller keep company with a marvelous array of dining darlings - and it looks like it's just the beginning of things to come.
With no more than a handful of old shopkeepers remaining, the neighborhood is now a sea of top-drawer shops and stops. Houston Street's Russ & Daughters remains a temple of ribbon-pink salmon, creamed herring and unbeatable chopped liver and the new Il Laboratorio del Gelato is one storefront over from Guss' pickles and crosswise from Orchard Street's Lower East Side Tenement Museum.
Grand Street's Harris Levy continues to sell the finest linens, Economy Candy remains a beloved institution and Gertel's Bakery still wins kudos for babka and coffeecakes. You may think you somehow took a wrong turn and ended up on a Parisian street corner, but it's actually the faux storefronts of the trompe l'oeil Epicerie and Café Charbon. Other posh nosh options: Aka Café, Tenement, 71 Clinton Fresh Food, Grilled Cheese NYC, Le Peré Pinard and Oliva.
